What is love? A four-letter word that connotes so much. An idea so hard to convey let alone comprehend completely.
Dare I claim that love itself is the cause of everything that exists.
For the worlds — this universe and the spiritual worlds above exist and came to become only through love. It is through Hashem’s (God’s) attribute of love that He willed and sustains a Creation.
But what is love? To be honest, I don’t know. I don’t think anybody does, really. Not completely.
We recognise facets of love, we feel love and we see when love is expressed.
If love is the cause behind existence then maybe our existence itself — simply to be — is an expression of love. Do we see that? The blessing it is to be, here, now, alive, awake, thinking, animated.
I also do not fathom that’s all there is to love.
In my imagination love is the most complex of all ideas.
It is commonly said “God is love,” and if that were true then love is simultaneously the simplest and most difficult thing to comprehend.
Love is a feeling, a doing, an appreciation, a caring. It is a mindfulness, a consideration, a noting, a thank you. A wish, a hope, a selfless act, a teaching.
Perhaps love is everything that is good. And all that is good is really love expressed. Maybe, just maybe, there is only love, and we just haven’t been able to recognise it yet?
Something to think about.
